Using herbs for cooking is a wonderful way to add spice and flavor to your everyday meals, and what could be better than using your own herbs from your own herb garden? Herbs have been used as an additive to flavor meals for centuries and the blending of flavors between herbs and vegetables and meats can really add depth to a dish.

Parsley is a herb that is commonly used in a variety of dishes. You see it in Italian foods as well as used with lamb, chicken, and mixed in with cheese. You can find it on top of soups and salads and, of course, it's always sitting on the side of your dish as a decorative garnish. By the way, the next time you see this don't be afraid to pick up the sprigs of parsley and chew on it after your meal. It will help freshen your breath.

Another herb, thyme, is one of the most commonly used ingredients in recipes. It can be used in tuna, stews, chicken and beef dishes. Add thyme to pretty much any dish - go ahead and experiment and see what flavors you can come up with.

One of the world's favorite herbs for cooking is basil which is a favorite in Italian dishes. You can find it on everything from lasagna to pizza and even soup. Basil goes great on bread with oil. It can even be mixed in with eggs.

The herb, anise, can be used for an interesting twist in any dish. Incidentally, this herb is used to flavor licorice, and can be great to add it to tea or any type of desert. Just remember, a little flavoring goes a long way with this herb.

Dill is another wonderful herb that is used in a lot of dishes. This also may be mixed with eggs. There's something about the two flavors mixed together that turn regular eggs into something special. The next time you make an omelet or even just scrambled eggs throw in a little bit of dill.

The mint family has begotten many popular herbs used in cooking. These include rosemary, sage, and peppermint. Mints add a bit of zest to any dish and are often used in jellies, soups, a rubs on meats, to add to main dishes and, of course, they are great to add to tea.

If you haven't used herbs for cooking before, you should definitely try it. Start with a mild herb, basil or dill. Add to one of your dishes. A good way to start is by making spaghetti and simply sprinkling some basil into the sauce. Once you start cooking with herbs you'll never go back!
